Parallel Kingdom Age of Exploration
Dusk Tree

The pale, knotted trunks of the Dusk trees have long been considered by farmers as harbingers of darker times. A young dusk tree looks similar to a standard Oak tree sapling, though a keen eye can easily spot the differences, namely the smaller, dark green leaves and lighter trunk. Any sapling growing alone in a field is easy enough to see and dispose of, but a plant in the middle of a forest will sometimes go unnoticed long enough to reach maturity. Once a Dusk tree grows to eight feet, it sheds its leaves and becomes completely carnivorous, producing clouds of vile spores that poison the air and ground, slowing sapping the life out of almost any living thing close by. The roots of the Dusk tree then entangle the other trees around it, sucking the nourishment from them and keeping them in a suspended state, somewhere between life and death. At this point, Dusk trees will quickly spread throughout the forest and completely take it over, creating a massive parasitic spectacle devoid of any animals, heavy with the scent of decay. Any fool who ventures into one of these forests without protection will be quickly overcome by pollen and die, providing an easy meal for the Dusk trees. If the bark of the Dusk tree is punctured, it will spray acidic sap that will cause second degree burns on any skin it touches. The sap can easily eat through cloth, but will take longer to eat through leather and is almost completely deterred by steel. Many venture into a Dusk tree grove in an attempt to recover the treasures of those who have fallen, only end up victims themselves.

"As I ran from the forest clutching a rag over my mouth and nose, I looked over my shoulder at the ghastly white trunks. They stood there, unmoving, knotted and crooked like so many broken corpses. Jon had fallen just before he'd made it out and was lying on the ground, his face covered with bloody sores. The roots were slowly crawling toward him. I kept running. This was the last time I saw my brother." -- Jakob, son of Went, goat herder.
