An axe is heavy; it is also sharp. This makes cutting through dense, thick - but not necessarily strong - things easy. Thin metal or hide is also no problem, but reinforced armor, or some huge creature's ever-flexible scales are a more considerable problem. One thing is certain- plant or animal, an axe can make it shorter fast.
"Whatever it was, it was about three feet tall and hiding behind a big metal shield. Every once in a while, it would poke its little snake head out and jab a spear at me. So I wound up my axe and when its head went down behind the shield I hit it hard on the top lip! It went through the metal and clipped off the thing's head. Well, that's how I got these boots."
